Coronary Artery Disease and Disability

Coronary Artery Disease can be a silent disease or it can lead to enormous life changes and a daily struggle for independence and quality. If Coronary Artery Disease affects your ability to work, it can lead to a loss of income. To qualify for disability income for Coronary Artery Disease the patient must follow the Social Security Administration's five-step evaluation process.

1) If the patient is working they must earn less than $500 per month.

2) Is the condition severe enough to interfere with basic work-related duties over time? The impairment must be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death and be considered severe enough to interfere with basic work-related activities.

3) Is the applicant's condition found in Social Security Administration’s list of disabling impairments?

a) A person will be considered disabled if the impairment meets with all of the medical criteria this includes an angiogram showing 50 to 70 percent blockage (amount varies depending on which artery) and obvious limitation of physical activity, or b) Disability can be established using steps 4 and 5 below to prove that the disability prevents the claimant from working.

4) Can the person still do the work s/he did in the last 15 years?

5) Considering the applicant's age, education, past work experience, and transferable skills can the person do any other type of work? Careful documentation by your doctor and a thorough written report are very important in proving disability and obtaining Social Security benefits for you.
